Backpack & carrying system
- 30–40L backpack with good hip belt
- Rain cover for backpack (if not integrated)
- Small lightweight day pouch or waist pack (optional)
- Dry bags or packing cubes for organization
Clothing
Base layers
- 2–3 quick-dry t-shirts or tops
- 1 long-sleeve layer (sun / cool mornings)
- 2 pairs lightweight hiking shorts or trousers (zip-off optional)
- 2–3 pairs quick-dry underwear
- 2–3 pairs hiking socks (plus 1 liner pair if you like)
Warmth & weather
- Light fleece or thin mid-layer
- Packable down or synthetic jacket (season-dependent)
- Waterproof jacket (breathable if possible)
- Light beanie or buff (multi-use)
Sleep & town clothes
- 1 set of sleepwear (t-shirt + shorts/leggings)
- 1 lightweight “evening” outfit for town (can double as backup hiking clothes)
- Flip-flops or lightweight sandals for showers and evenings
Footwear
- Trail runners or lightweight hiking shoes (well broken in)
- Optional: lightweight trekking poles
Sleep system
- Lightweight sleeping bag or liner (season and albergue heating dependent)
- Compact travel pillow or pillowcase (use clothes inside)
- Earplugs and eye mask
Toiletries & health
You can buy everything you need toiletries wise along the Camino — there's no need to carry full‑size toiletries. If you want, to pack some items ahead, these are useful.
- Toothbrush, small toothpaste, floss
- Travel-size soap or body wash
- Shampoo bar or small bottle
- Deodorant (travel size)
- Razor (if needed)
- Quick-dry travel towel (small/medium)
- Nail clippers
- Basic first aid: plasters, blister care, pain relief, any personal meds
- Small pack of tissues / toilet paper
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunscreen – the Spanish sun is strong, especially on long exposed stretches.
- Earplugs – essential for sleeping in shared albergue dorms.
- Foot care items - Compeed, Leukotape, or blister‑prevention products to keep your feet healthy over 800km.
Documents & money
- Passport (check expiry)
- Pilgrim credential (Credencial)
- Travel insurance details
- Debit/credit card + backup card
- Some cash in euros
- Printed copies or digital backups of key documents
Electronics
- Phone + charging cable
- Universal adapter (if needed)
- Power bank (small, lightweight)
- Headphones or earbuds
- Optional: e-reader or small notebook
Small extras that make life easier
- Safety pins or small clothes pegs for drying laundry
- Short length of cord or travel clothesline
- Reusable water bottle (500–750 ml) or soft flask
- Small spork or cutlery (optional)
- Ziplock bags for snacks and organization
- Mini sewing kit (needle + a bit of thread)
- Lightweight sun hat or cap
What not to overpack
The Camino is lined with towns, pharmacies, and shops. You can replace or add things as you go.
Use this list as a baseline, then remove anything you know you won’t use regularly. Your back
will thank you. For backpacks - avoid Tactical/military packs (too heavy), Foldable/packable backpacks (no frame), Cheap “travel” backpacks with no hip belt, anything over 1.5kg empty, anything with a ladder‑style back panel (poor ventilation)..
